NABJ-Milwaukee Scholarships
INVESTING IN OUR FUTURE MEDIA PROFESSIONALS
NABJ-Milwaukee is proud to offer two scholarships for deserving students, preferably from Milwaukee and the surrounding area.
NABJ-Milwaukee Internship Program
The NABJ-Milwaukee Internship Program provides paid, hands-on experience for students interested in pursuing careers in journalism, media, and communications. Funded by a grant from the Journal Foundation, the program is designed to complement academic study through practical exposure to digital content creation, event coordination, and audience engagement. Interns work on real projects, develop professional skills, and build connections with journalists and media professionals while supporting NABJ-Milwaukee’s mission to expand access and representation in the media industry.
Carole J. Meekins Scholarship
This scholarship is named for longtime Emmy Award-winning journalist Carole J. Meekins. Carole J. Meekins, now retired, worked for TMJ4 in Milwaukee for 32 years. A former music teacher, she served as co-anchor of “TMJ4 News at 5” with Steve Chamraz. From 2020 until her retirement in 2023, Carole hosted the "Positively Milwaukee Show With Carole J. Meekins," which featured uplifting and inspiring stories from across the Milwaukee area. The Carole J. Meekins Scholarship is awarded to high school seniors and college students majoring in journalism.
Gregory D. Standford Scholarship
Gregory D. Stanford was a founding member of the Wisconsin Black Media Association and one of the most respected editorial columnists at the Milwaukee Journal and Milwaukee Journal Sentinel until his retirement in 2007. A native of Washington, D.C., Stanford graduated from Marquette University and played a key role in the development of what is now known as the Educational Opportunity Program (EOP). He passed away in 2019. In his honor, the Gregory D. Stanford Scholarship supports high school seniors and college students who have a passion for journalism and aspire to pursue a career in the field.
